Weaving Kreta Ayer
Urban Conservation and Regeneration Strategy
Group 3 - AC5003 AY 2022/2023
Site Context
The Kreta Ayer is one of the 4 subdistricts of Chinatown in Central Singapore.
Proximity
The Kreta Ayer neighborhood is at close proximity to other historic and major development zones.
Crowd Management
Kreta Ayer, being a tourist place, witnesses a large number of floating crowds everyday. Therefore , the concept of connecting is also about dispersing the crowd into required destinations such as allowing the working people to get to office via the Main Avenue while the residents and tourists can access the back lanes and green corridors to get to different places in and around Kreta Ayer.
Elements Constituting to the Concept
The multi-nodal concept of Kreta Ayer can be made possible by engaging the existing community and the new crowd with the proposed interventions such mixed use developments, green squares, public plaza, pedestrian links and tourist hotspots.
Connect, Adapt, and Empower
This is the primary concept that constitutes the urban strategy for our Kreta Ayer. By Connect we try to express the requirement and importance of Connecting people, connecting people to multiple areas of interest, connecting the green pockets and connecting the history and heritage.
By adapt we try to emphasize the importance of addressing the changes and challenges faced by the heritage buildings and turn them into compatible spaces that can render the needs of the current and future generation.
By empower we want to understand and appreciate the existing community and religious spaces that adds character to the area and hence the idea is to put their values in spotlight by making them more accessible and interactive spaces.

Connect the Green
This strategy aims to develop connections between the various green spaces and interweave with them with the existing and proposed pedestrian links inorder to achieve a well knit walking space. This strategy does not only reinforce pedestrian routes but also supports the health of the users by making these routes the primary means of transit within the area.
Adapt the Buildings, New and Old
This strategy aims to strengthen the economic development by incorporating mixed use developments with hybrid retail and office spaces, workshops and training centers and night markets along the Sago Lane and New Bridge Street. It also focuses on adapting the underused shophouses' back lanes into Green Connecting Links that will not only activate the area but also boost its economy.
Empower the Community
The idea behind this strategy is to enhance the values of the local culture by empowering the focus on existing religious buildings along the south bridge road that will aid in tourism development and also to connect the existing HDB community with new attractive and interactive spaces.
Historic and Multi-Religious Fabric
An opportunistic corridor to emphasize the intangibility of Kreta Ayer's complex identity, which constitutes other ethnic and religious groups.

ADAPT,
CONNECT &
EMPOWER
Our strategy emphasizes on implementing a multi-nodal system within Kreta Ayer by developing connections and designing interventions at three key points. These points can serve as independent and as an interconnected system that allows the town to grow organically.
